Synchronous breath and movement.

Rocket Yoga is more than a sequence, it’s an attitude. I try to embrace its joyful rebel spirit while respecting the discipline it instils. It is physically challenging, but then so is CrossFit. What sets the practice apart is the breath-focused moving meditation of the “4-Beat”.

66.6 “The Number of the Beats”

Music plays an integral role in setting the attuned tempo of every class. The soundtrack is specially mixed to unite the breath, bass and movement in one synchronous flow. More than a playlist of favourite songs thrown together, I like to create a seamless DJ set for every class layering tracks and textures over a constant beat over a constant tempo at the golden ratio of breaths to beats per minute (~ 66.6 bpm / 8 breaths per minute.)

So much research from the original yogis to modern day scientific studies, shows that maintaining a lower respiratory rate with a calm focus when under stress is the key to broad spectrum health, vitality and lifespan longevity. From ancient yogin and Tibetan monks, to Ice Man Wim Hof and Olympic athletes, it is believed that controlling the breath can bring mastery over the body's immune, endocrine and autonomic nervous systems, and ultimately, the mind itself.

4-Beat is the thread

The unbroken 4 beat is the thread the sews the practice together. It provides the path home for the breath, when the mind wanders or the body falters. Asana, Pranayama, Dharana drive the practice, but all of Patanjali’s 8 limbs are there in every breath, if you want to find them.
